Protecting the Children — Preserving Us All
Driving to work the other day, I passed the usual stretch of road flanked by military facilities. As always, I anticipated a smooth journey. But today was different. Soldiers abruptly halted traffic on both sides of the road. Their mission became clear as they guided a group of schoolchildren across. A warm smile spread across my face as I watched the children, especially one who turned to wave at her guardian. Yet, a curious thought struck me: would these soldiers stop traffic and provide military protection for random adults? I’m not sure I’ve seen it happen before. What makes children so special? Are their lives inherently more valuable? These questions might seem strange coming from a doting father, as understandably, I would be expected to always view anything concerning children from a parental perspective; but they were a genuine attempt to understand the underlying rationale.
It wasn’t a malicious inquiry, but a mental dialogue trying to justify the preferential treatment afforded to children. One answer emerged: children are our future. Protecting them is an investment in tomorrow. They carry the hopes and dreams of our world, a continuation of life. Children embody innocence, untouched by the divisions that plague humanity.
