Remember…
This one is for Tosin… and for you too.
Every time I meet Tosin, we always somehow discuss God’s goodness in our lives over the years and it’s the most beautiful thing. (I however forgot to take a picture with her)
It’s very easy to keep going through life, worrying about your next step and just doing things without pausing to remember how far God has brought you. I once said something about resting and acknowledging your achievements sometimes before jumping to the next thing.
However, today I want you to REMEMBER.
You might think that your life is all bad. Nothing good is happening for you. You are stuck in one place. Things are not going according to how you planned your life. You are yet to achieve all you planned to achieve before the age you are turning. Your friends are moving forward and you are just stuck. You are not as successful as your peers.
I could go on and on and on.
It’s very easy to focus on everything not working and get scared about the future. But one thing that always comes up in my conversations with Tosin is reflection of how God has come through in the past. And bruhhh, God has been coming through since forever — do you think He’d stop now?
Remember that time you spent your last naira to buy amala or shawarma and you were thinking, ‘if I perish, I perish’ — then someone you did not ask decides to send you money just for the sake of it.
When you were worried about moving to a new place but you went there and God blessed you with the most beautiful people.
When you were craving a particular meal and someone bought you the exact meal.
When you thought you’d fail an exam but you passed! I remember being worried that I would not even write my exams then because the country was here and there, but see me doctoring.
When you thought it’d be difficult to get a job but now you have a job!
I could go on and on. If you sit down and write all the good that has happened for and to you in the past year, it’s a lot, now take it to the past 5 years, 10 years… You’d literally have a book titled ‘The Goodness of God in {insert name} Life.
God has always come through for you in the past and you can trust Him to come through again and again.
Oh, I know life is not all roses — but in the midst of the thorns, there is always beauty to look at. I know very hurtful things could have happened and it could seem impossible to move on, but there still so much beauty surrounding you.
I want you to let go of that fear. Let go of that fear of your future because the God that brought you to the point you’re at now (which you were not even sure of) will take you to a more beautiful future.
Again, life will life, but that doesn’t change who God is.
And you know what remembering will do for you? It helps your mind see the possibilities of your present situation and your future. If all that good happened to you when you did not know that they will — imagine the greatness that awaits you?
A mantra I live by is that ‘All things work together for my good’. ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR MY GOOD!
It might not look like it, but it’s sure working.
Again, REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD GOD HAS DONE — let that be your template for the future.
There’s a reason the Israelites made sure generations that did not experience Moses parting the Red Sea and God providing manna (amongst others) have songs to remind them of who God is.
Jacob despite his riches and full life made sure his children knew that it was God that brought him through his life. That yes, a lot of good has happened and it was all God.
(If you’re not a Christian and you are reading this, errrr… tbh, same principle applies.)
Always REMEMBER the difficult situations you escaped and use them as a template for your future.
REMEMBER that even if you’ve had a lot of beauty in your past, it means there is still a lot good and beauty to be experienced.
REMEMBER.
An intrusive thought to end this:
Ever wondered what a bus conductor’s POV is? Depending on the topography of the road, he’s likely seeing many rooftops — what’s the wind feel like on his face. How exactly is he hanging on? What happens if he does not hang on well?
