Eyes that speak

Each gaze, each blink.

They say the eyes are the gateway to one’s soul and heart.
Some are lively — open for the world to see.
Others are quiet, shut tight, allowing no one to enter.

Art by Amy Slatem.

I long to watch their eyes and uncover their hearts.
For the eyes hide countless secrets,
meaning buried beneath each glance, each blink.

To watch and learn from a soul is a beautiful thing —
to discover a life, a story, in a single glance.
Each gaze, unique.

Old, and kind eyes— etched with wisdom.
Sight may fade, yet not a single memory is hazy.

Tired, weary eyes of adults speak volumes.
They bear burdens, they carry love —
responsibilities, their silent testament.

A youngster’s eyes shine with possibility,
bright and daring, ever ready for adventure.

A teenager’s eyes, lost in self-reflection,
seeking purpose, testing limits.

An infant’s eyes, locked onto mother and father —
their entire world,
absorbing, imitating, seeing life anew.

Yet, how sorrowful it is —
that I may never see life through another’s eyes.
