The Deception of Comfort

I was walking down the street in Lisbon when I saw this gentleman standing in the middle of the street. I had never seen an anatomy configured like his, so I approached and asked if I could take his photo. He offered the biggest smile, and if you only saw the top half, you would never imagine that his lower half had developed as it appears. I carry his picture on my business card as a reminder to be grateful.

The deception of comfort lies in the fact that we don’t worry about what we have and what we are consistently doing. We experience a mental and emotional freedom that allows us to navigate life without the same urgency that perhaps characterized our younger years when we struggled to establish ourselves.

I love airplane examples because they symbolize aspects of life that suggest progress is challenging if we don’t gain momentum. Focusing all your energy toward a specific goal matters greatly.

The challenge with ease is that it also has the potential to weaken our spirits because there are fewer problems to solve, as the days and weeks flow smoothly. It can produce similar results to rarely doing any form of exercise, as the calories are converted to fat, and our bodies slowly grow larger and softer over time.
