Dear American friends,
what is going on over there?

In Italy, there is a palpable sense of concern for your situation.

It is true that there has always been a segment of public opinion in Italy that has been antagonistic towards the United States, at least since the 1950s. However, this sentiment emerged during the period of the Cold War, when Italy boasted the most robust communist party in the Western world. During those years, it was commonplace to read acerbic criticism of Washington in , the official newspaper of the Italian Communist Party. It is possible that a proportion of American public opinion may be under the impression that the prevailing sentiment remains unchanged, leading to the perception that Italians (along with continental Europeans) continue to lack understanding or appreciation for the United States.
However, this perspective does not reflect the contemporary political landscape. The period under discussion is now a thing of the past, and the Italian Communist Party has been non-existent for at least four decades. The futile attempts to revive the party have resulted in the formation of political groups that garner a mere 2% of the vote, consequently being excluded from Parliament.
It is evident that Italy does not align with communist ideologies and does not harbor animosity towards the United States.
