My One Focus for 2025
Remembering a pep talk from my middle school principal.
Growing up, the day I dreaded most, besides the first day of school, was returning to the classroom after a two-week holiday vacation.
It was cold the morning I entered the middle school campus. My only wish was to return home and get back into bed, where I usually was this time of day, but that was not happening.
Walking down the hallway, I noticed a vast white poster hanging on the wall with the following words painted on it:
“Choose one thing.”
I saw all the classroom doors swung open; I realized each door had a smaller sign with the exact quote.
I didn’t think much of it; I was, after all, only thirteen years old.
Later in the day, I sat in the homeroom when the school intercom came on, and I soon heard our principal’s voice and the day’s usual announcements. We all stopped what we were doing and listened as the familiar voice welcomed us back and provided updates on upcoming activities. As he began to wrap up, he said the following words.
“You’ve all noticed the words, ‘Choose one thing’ on signs all over campus. The teachers and I have adopted that as our slogan for 1990. People write a list of New Year’s resolutions they never…
