Can a language really be ‘ugly,’ or is it all in the ear of the listener?

Ugly to some, beautiful to others — some languages just have a distinct edge that makes them stand out.
Their unique sounds, tones, or structures might not appeal to everyone, but they’re undeniably fascinating and full of character.
While I don’t believe any language is outright ugly, some languages often get labeled as less appealing.
Here are the ones that people commonly vote as… let’s call them “acquired tastes:”
- German
Guttural sounds and harsh endings can be intense, but Schmetterling (butterfly) is still cute. #LoudButLovely - Danish
The sound of Danish is like speaking with marbles in your mouth, but it’s oddly endearing. #UniqueVibes - Welsh
Consonant-heavy words like Llanfairpwllgwyngyll are a lot to handle. #TongueTwister - Cantonese
Its rapid tones can feel abrupt, but it’s undeniably expressive. #ToneHeavy - Russian
The throaty consonants can sound tough, but it’s perfect for dramatic monologues. #Strong&Proud - Finnish
Unique, rhythmic, and a little daunting for non-speakers. #LongWordsForever - Arabic
Strong and bold, its sharp edges take some getting used to. #CommandingPresence - Basque
Rare and fascinating, but it’s certainly a mouthful for beginners. #LinguisticMystery - Turkish
The vowel harmony is cool but robotic-sounding to outsiders. #TechieTones - Hungarian
Its vowel-heavy words can feel overwhelming but are full of character. #AccentAdventure
Beauty might be in the ear of the listener, but these languages prove that ‘ugly’ can still be fascinating.
