My 16 Year Old Vibe Coded His School Project With GitHub Copilot

It was a sunny Sunday morning and I was sitting in the garden when suddenly my wife Nicole came out and gave me the looks that can cause an instant heart attack. She does that even though the reason mostly isn’t heart attack worthy. You never know whether doomsday is around the corner or I just forgot to take out the trash. She stared at me for a while and then said “You promised to help him with the school project in computer science”. Seconds later my oldest one sneaks into the garden. A 16 year old that had little motivation to write code on a sunny Sunday morning and neither did I.

My son’s “Stickman Game” school project in Python

We had talked about the school project weeks ago already. As it happens with teenagers and adults alike, they tend to procrastinate things until the bitter end. The task description of the school project was also very vague. It essentially said “build something”. My oldest and my youngest one are both doing Python in school. Not my favorite language and the only thing worse than doing Python for me is doing Python on a sunny Sunday morning. Weeks ago, my initial idea was to build a small LLM powered web server in Go. But since his granmother, a computer science teacher in a different school district, said he should build something the teachers want to see and that reflects the prior classes, it just had to be Python.
