“Forty thousand shillings a month,” the woman promised, her voice syrupy. “Free housing. Free meals. Just cook and clean. You’ll be rich in two years.”
It sounded like a golden ticket. Halima, barely nineteen, had spent the last year hawking second-hand clothes in Kibuye Market, dodging boda boda traffic and men who stared too long. Her father had died suddenly of a stroke. Her mother, a casual laborer, had begun coughing blood. Bills were choking the family.
