I once stopped in front of a roaming vegetable salesman, who appeared distressed and forlorn. I wanted to ease his burden, so I inquired about his condition. He stated, “You are better off than us. You completed your education, achieved success, and are literate.” I consoled him, asking, “What’s the difference?” He said, “I can’t read.” Every year, I tell this story to my pupils to help them understand the importance of reading. What distinguishes someone who does not read from someone who cannot? Do we have to go back in time to comprehend the worth of books?
A story is told of a child who asked his father, “Is the magic carpet real?” “Can we have one?” His father responded, “We have something better than a magic carpet.” Then he withdrew for a moment and handed the youngster a book, saying, “This, my son, can transport you to the past, present, and future without you leaving your seat!”
Despite its brief length, this story conveys a meaningful message. A book summarizes worlds, eras, and lives for us. If you don’t have time to read, force yourself to make time.
