Understanding Why People Cling So Much To Religion

Religion makes people feel secure and comforted in the face of larger-than-life, existential questions like ‘What happens when I die?’, ‘What is my purpose in life?’, Why am I here on this Earth?’, ‘What or who will protect me in the face of danger?’, etc.

That’s one big reason why people strongly cling to religion. Whether they admit it subconsciously or not, that neediness for comfort and security is always there when it comes to religious beliefs. It’s a very inherent aspect of our humanity.

We feel greatly assured by God’s existence and our religion

We are, to a certain extent, emotionally dependent on external factors. And in this case, we’re emotionally dependent on God for that sense of assurance and protection. We feel comforted knowing there’s a powerful being behind the creation of the Universe and Earth, and who’s watching over us, will protect us and answer our prayers.

In a way, we see religion and God as a way of lifting certain burdens and problems off our shoulders. We don’t have to deal with certain problems in our lives when we can just send them to God to fix, and rely on Him to solve said problems.
