Observation is Your Superpower As A Writer

I won’t lie, boring stuff irritates me.

The moment I start reading an article and it shows signs of rigidity, I close it and look for someone who has my best interest at heart.

Observation is your superpower as a writer. I spoke with someone about it yesterday. If you can observe what’s happening around you, 90% of your work is done.

You struggle to write authentic stories because you overlook details.

Many writers suffer creative blocks because they’re concerned with sounding smart by dumping texts baptized in verbose grammar. Who told you people are interested in reading a PhD thesis?

Well…I’m not interested.

Writing is not just about knowledge of vocabulary and structure; it’s about effective communication.

If you write all the grammar in this world and nobody understands, you’ve only wasted your time.

Observation is important as a writer. It helps you learn and master storytelling. And your writing improves because your “How-Tos” transform into “How-Is.”

Creativity isn’t only about weaving words. It’s an art of observation.

You need self-awareness to scale through as a writer.

Your issue isn’t writer’s block; it’s negligence. Look around — there are ideas everywhere — but you believe that the only way out is by writing an emotionless article, that lacks flair. Honestly, reading it would hurt my brain.

Writer’s block becomes insignificant when you look deeply and take potential ideas seriously.

I’d tell you why

I won a writing competition in 2019.

I was blank on how to start my essay; I wasn’t prepared for it.

In under 10 minutes, I fizzled out. We had to write under supervision, and while others were writing aggressively, I felt terrible for finding myself in a mess. I was livid and almost left the venue.

Fortunately, a party was happening nearby, and the speaker was so loud that I could hear every song played.

IRE, a song by Adekunle Gold, played and matched the essay’s topic. It caught my attention and I used it to start my essay.

The grass is greener on the other side. That’s what I thought before I took the ride. I burned my bridges, so I’ll never look back.

My introductory line.

Those words gave me the momentum.

I turned into a beast with my pen and the rest is history.

I transitioned from having a blank sheet to writing one of the greatest pieces you’ll ever read.

My piece won the essay of that year.

What helped me? Music.

How did I get inspired? Through observation.

Observation is key.

Don’t play with it.
