Is ChatGPT Really Helping Students?
AI in education: Tool or crutch?
As a student, I personally use ChatGPT as my study buddy—and it truly helps me. But not everyone uses it effectively. While I find it convenient, there are many students who aren’t aware of how to use AI tools like ChatGPT or Meta AI efficiently.
Recently, there’s been a noticeable trend: more and more students have started relying on AI tools like ChatGPT or other platforms to prepare for their exams. It sounds smart and efficient, but there are risks that come with it. The content generated by these tools isn’t always accurate or aligned with the exact context we need.
For example, in one of our English exams, we had a lesson called Home-Coming Son by Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin. The same title could exist under different authors, and if students aren’t aware of the specific context, last-minute AI searches can completely mislead them.
Moreover, many students copy-paste answers directly from AI or class notes. But for subjects like science, this approach doesn’t work. Science demands depth. You have to elaborate, connect ideas, and sometimes go beyond the textbook to present a complete answer. Sadly, many fail…
