Our choices define our lives. Yet, in the midst of the commotion of daily demands, it is easy to fall into the trap of mental shortcuts or instinct. Regrettably, most of the time, this capture leads to mistakes or to results that could have been better.

So, is there a proven way to make smarter choices and avoid common pitfalls?

Yet there is hope: There’s research to show that evidence-informed decision making does allow for improved choices, reduced biases, and minimization of mistakes. One can objectively find the right option using a systematic approach and improve the end results.

Here is a step-by-step guide to this scientific approach:

1. Define Your Goal

Clearly define your goal first.

Write out what you want and why it matters when faced with a decision.

Those that studied at Harvard discovered that before seeking for alternatives, defining the objectives tends to lead to good decisions. For instance, if you are getting a new car, spell out what you need (space for cargo, fuel efficiency, safety) to narrow your thinking toward decision-making.

2. Gather Extensive Input
