What the Pope Actually Believes and Why It’s Bigger Than Politics
The pundits, politicians, and even some religious folks are frantically searching and looking for clues, past comments and posts, and any proof of the new Pope’s political loyalties. Let me answer that for you:
HE HAS NONE (and yes, I am screaming). His loyalty is to God.
He is not a liberal or a conservative. He’s Catholic. Catholicism does not fall neatly into the boxes the world wants to place it in. If you are looking for the Pope to talk, behave, and act exclusively as a Democrat or Republican, you are going to stay mad and disappointed.
Political Parties Are Secular.
Both of these parties and ideologies that divide us so deeply as a nation are secular and have secular priorities, mainly to either maintain the status quo power hierarchy and/or deepen the wealth and power gap in this country. They are beholden to the special interest groups, corporations, and lobbyists who line their coffers, not us. Sometimes I feel like they don’t care about us at all.
