I Thought Getting a Bi Pride Tattoo Would Help Bi Visibility

Six months later, I can’t say my bisexuality feels any less invisible.

As I said in “Wearing My Bi Pride on My Skin”:

For years and years, I convinced myself that everyone knew about me being bi (or, at least, assumed it). I believed that just me being me made it so obvious that I didn’t need to directly draw attention to it.

I was absolutely fooling myself.

I had high hopes that by tattooing the bi pride colors in a clearly visible spot on my body, I’d suddenly feel “seen” as a bisexual.

Turns out I was probably fooling myself yet again.

I may be more visible within the LGBTQ+ community but, to those who view the world through a thick cishet filter, I still don’t think they are seeing beyond their assumptions.

I’ve come to believe that a significant portion of the population is simply not familiar with Pride colors, at least not anything outside of a rainbow flag. And, it is quite possible that even if I’d chosen to get a rainbow tattoo, those who view the world wearing monosexual goggles would still assume it must mean something else because they’d never even consider the B of the LGBTQ+ community.
