The Warrior God
The loud side of Christianity in America
Towering over a world that you can destroy with a whim is cool. Throw in the imprimatur of morality, and the fact that you’re a psychopath becomes irrelevant.
You don’t really understand America if you don’t see why those two sentences capture the essence of American culture. Yes, the church was key in the civil rights movement, but the movement was only necessary because White southern Christians insisted Blacks did not deserve the rights Whites enjoyed.
We assert the right to treat you any way we want, and your moral inferiority justifies our behavior.
A lot is being made of the contrast between a devout Catholic Democrat and a belligerent, narcissistic Republican, but, as usual, the freak out is totally missing the reality of our country. Legitimacy in America is defined by strength, not compassion, not forgiveness, not humility. I am a Christian if you know that I will punch you in the mouth if you dare doubt my piety. I’m whatever — communist, liberal, socialist — if I feed the poor, mentor children, or stand for the rights of the weak.
That’s why people seem to get off on dumping on Biden and speak of Trump as if he were Voldermort. You can decry that ludicrous situation all you want, but you’re actually just refusing to accept the reality of our culture.
It’s as if we think we’re on Vulcan, but in reality, the United States of America is more like the planet Klingon.
