The number one reason why you don’t write, why you don’t know what to write, and why you never hit publish, is because you’re worried about what someone else will think.

So, where should you start writing? That is a question I’ve been asked a lot this week.

There’s a moment in the movie 8 Mile where Eminem is faced with a similar decision.

So he says everything bad about his life before the other rapper can say it first.

Although my movie choice may seem corny, it taught me a lot about what I wanted to write.

I’ve spent years holding in what I thought about life, about people, the way I was raised, my family, and everything in between. But I realized, after leaving a toxic relationship, that I had lost 20 years of my life and remained silent.

That silence cost me everything. I never spoke up. I never told anyone what was happening. I never confided in anyone.

I did the same thing as a kid. I never told anyone what was going on at home. Even though my best friend lived just 101 doors down from me, she had no clue I lived in a violent house. I was very good at silencing anything that came into my world. I became an expert.
