Summer days and chore dodging
Growing up, summer breaks for me were all about the freedom to sleep in or not and hanging out with friends. Both of my parents worked, and I was left in charge of babysitting my younger sister.
I was 14 -15 yrs. old at the time and wasn’t much of a stickler for chores, I mean like what teenagers were, I guess there are some taskmasters out there, but I wasn’t one of them. As long as my sister was safe, she would be off with her friends while I was off finding things to do with mine.
One summer, my cousin came to visit and stayed for a couple of weeks, and our only job was to keep the house clean, wash the dishes, and — most importantly — make our beds. Of course, being the procrastinating teenagers we were, we always waited until the very last moment. We turned it into a challenge to see how long we could wait until doing our chores and still pass the parent test. We got it down to about three minutes. There were no dishes — we made sure to use disposable things like napkins. Since we were mostly outside, there was little to do inside.
