Microfiction: From NYC Midnight 100-word Challenge
“Hello.” She pushed the door open, jingling the keys she’d pulled from the lockbox. She hated new listings, especially old, vacant houses. They smelled stale and normally took hours to clean.
She made her way to the kitchen, opening doors along the hall. Dust and more dust. At least the appliances looked clean.
Entering the room, the smell of overdone meat caught her attention. “What is that,” she mused aloud and flicked the switch for the light and exhaust fan. White mist flew from the vent.
She stared across the cold marble, unable to move, as the basement door opened.
This was my Round 1 Submission, and second attempt at microfiction. I didn’t make it to Round 2, but the feedback I received was positive. I look forward to next year.
