JAGUAR II as Legacy
Victoria Monét’s debut album cements her status as a force to be reckoned with
Victoria Monét is no stranger to the music industry. A seasoned song-writer and performer, Monét is a professional in her craft and her discography shows exactly that. Incomparably well-rounded, experimental, and diverse in sound and rhythm, Monét’s music does not come to play; her artistry is her biggest asset, beside her syrupy voice and immense dance skills, and she perceives it as such. It is evident, even on a first listen, that Monét possesses both talent and intentionality.
Monét’s debut studio album JAGUAR II follows 2020 EP JAGUAR, which is comprised of some of the most rhythmically exciting and groovy songs of the 2000s. The titular track “Jaguar” is admittedly one of my favorite songs of all time, and all bias aside, Monét shines on this song in ways that call back to the major eras of funk and R&B.
Other tracks like “Dive,” “Ass Like That,” and “We Might Even Be Falling in Love” are silky smooth and sensual, which are adjectives that perfectly describe Monét’s discography. But, enough about JAGUAR. Let’s get into her latest project, one that I — alongside many — have been anticipating for months.
