The World Needs More Political Writers
March and April 2025 updates from The Political Prism
The political right owns much of social media, but not when it comes to long-form writing. I challenge you to send me an essay defending Trump’s (ever-changing) tariff policy that isn’t a thread on X from an anonymous guy in his basement who cosplays as a “citizen journalist.” Perhaps this is why I am still so confused about how Trump expects to define success from these tariffs.
In last month’s update at The Political Prism, I challenged anyone to come forward with a pro-Trump perspective because I was still hunting for a thoughtful and well-researched piece supporting his positions. A story arrived from a Trump voter explaining why he voted for the man, and let’s just say the audience on Medium wasn’t entirely friendly.
I’m not surprised. Trump is as polarizing as it gets in modern-day America, but I’d like to remind everyone — no matter how disingenuous you thought that story was or what you thought of the author, that’s an American voter. We need as many of them as possible on the side of democracy, civil liberties, the rule of law, and a rules-based world order. Attacking these folks with ad hominems and non-substantive, below-the-belt shots is not only poor rhetoric, it’s counterproductive.
