5 Fierce Females Writing on Motherhood
A reading list to challenge our perspectives on birth-giving.
To have or not have children is a daunting question. At least when you don’t have any, and there’s no giving the idea a test try.
Just as writers are often the worst people with whom to talk about their own books, parents can have a hard time fitting the whole experience into words. I’ve often found my friends’ accounts on parenthood awfully unspecific. As if the whole adventure remained hidden behind a veil, through which only those with the actual experience of having children can see.
Thankfully, some mothers also are writers.
And while it might be quite a struggle to invent a new vocabulary, on top of just finding time to write, these writers are game-changers for us. They invite us into one of the most complex and life-altering events a human can go through.
The writers listed below are, by far, not the only authors who have explored the topic of parenthood in their books.
Yet, I’ve found their essays and novels compelling. They offer brutally honest accounts on the numerous facets of motherhood, naming the challenges accompanying it and injecting us with an extra shot of realness.
