Life After College
I was told I’d be a failure without a degree, but now I can’t land a career
College is a sore topic for me right now. I was hyped up about furthering my education and made to believe I would be nothing without it. Didn’t matter what degree, so long as I got the piece of paper.
To start, I’m 28 (turning 29 in November), I have a BBA and an MBA. I started off as a pre-vet student, changed to criminal justice and got an associate degree, then switched to business and finished my degree in that.
I grew up poor. Like dirt poor. Not just the typical family living paycheck to paycheck.
My stepmom was a waitress for Huddle House and eventually worked for Subway. She dropped out of the 9th grade and had my stepsister at 16. My dad was disabled due to an accident at birth which rendered him legally blind. He worked a blue-collar job making $8 an hour so the state wouldn’t take away his disability check. No one else would hire him, his eyes danced and he didn't have a driver’s license. Pretty sure he only graduated at almost 22 because they got tired of his ass.
We lived off of food stamps, free pantries, and whatever utility assistance we could get. We lived in some pretty run-down trailers and of course, they could always afford weed.
