The Price of Belonging: Europe’s Golden Passports and Hidden Borders

As courts debate “elite” access to citizenship, Europe’s border-industrial complex profits from violence, displacement, and apartheid as the silence and inaction on Palestine and Gaza continues. We need system change, not cosmetic rulings. Malta’s golden passports were only the surface. The real issue is who gets to belong in a Europe built on walls, war, and wealth.

The has ruled that the Maltese “𝙜𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩” scheme violates EU law. The ruling offers a vision of EU citizenship based on values and participation. I argue, can those values survive when solidarity ends at the border?
