Welcome back! In Chapter 4, Richter tries to distance himself from Kylie, so he reassigns her to a rundown school outside the city.

Wanda led Kylie through an ornate red gate that said something in Chinese. It had dragons painted on either post.

“We’re here,” Wanda said.

As soon as they passed through the gate, Kylie knew there had to be some kind of mistake. This couldn’t be their school.

“So, um, our school is directly behind the city dump?”

“Nope,” Wanda answered. “This is it, Number Twelve Primary School. Land of dreams.”

Kylie expected something a little rundown; she didn’t expect a building whose every surface could give her tetanus. Or hepatitis. Or… do people get malaria this far north?

The school was divided into three two-story buildings and one three-story building with a bell tower crowning the top. Paint was peeling, windows were broken, and small woodland creatures seemed to make their homes in the piles of garbage and lumber lining the courtyard.

Secretly, Kylie hoped that Wanda would shout, “Kidding!” and take her to the real school. She knew that wasn’t going to happen, though…
