Kashmir: Anatomy of an Entrenched Crisis

A look at the chronology of a conflict that could define the future of the world

--

The tortured, extended history of conflict with Pakistan and India has hit another dangerous phase.

As someone who has closely followed the geopolitics of South Asia for many years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the complexity and volatility of the India-Pakistan conflict. The recent escalation between the two countries, with missile strikes and retaliatory airstrikes, brings to the forefront the deep-rooted tensions that have plagued the region for decades. In the last couple of days, the tense ongoing situation has driven me to reflect on the historical context behind this conflict and its implications for the future.

With the latest violence serving as a stark reminder of the precarious balance in Kashmir, I felt it important to explore the history and the anatomy of the conflict, to provide my eventual readers with some insights into what’s at stake. This article is an attempt to understand and explain these tensions.

India launched a series of missile attacks into Pakistan on May 7, 2025, prompting a direct military clash between two nuclear-armed neighbors. Pakistan quickly responded by downing several Indian planes and firing its own retaliatory strikes.
