Her Lonely Heart Amidst the Snow-Covered Pines
Waiting and wanting
Nina entered the lockbox code at the door of her vacation rental.
It was supposed to be their romantic getaway in the trees.
She kicked the snow from her hiking boots and crossed the threshold, dropping her bag. For this trip, she didn’t need silky teddies or lacy things. She only required flannels and warm socks to ward against drafts. Even though a large pile of wood waited by a stone fireplace, she wasn’t in the mood to strike the match.
She wanted to crawl under a blanket.
It has been two months since she walked away from Dan, almost to the day. He heeded her words about no contact. Without any clue as to how he was doing, she felt lost without his presence. The emptiness in her heart was a constant reminder of the void he left behind.
Toeing off the boots, she shrugged off her heavy coat. The cabin lived up to the Airbnb website pictures — an intimate and cozy view of the lake and pines — a perfect romantic weekend for lovers.
I should have cancelled.
But she didn’t. It was the last thing they planned together before the fateful day when she told him it was over — she was walking away.
