He was an hour into his journey towards the cottage in the pines.

Nina didn’t know he was coming. His former lover was staying in the vacation rental they had booked together before the affair ended.

That was two long months ago. Much has changed since then. Four weeks prior, he told his wife it was over and moved out of the marital home. He felt their relationship had died ten or even fifteen years before, but he didn’t give up the fight. Until he broke apart. The affair kept him sane through tough times, giving him hope for a future full of love. Nina navigated her way through a divorce. She was ready for her happy ever after.

His lover was strong and independent.

So he wasn’t entirely surprised when she ended the affair. Something had to give. If he didn’t change his life, then it was on her to make that call. They both wanted so much more. Time wasn’t on his side. The minutes were ticking away on his affair and marriage. How could he save both? Did he want to save both?

Clarity slapped him hard as Nina walked away.

Another half hour passed, and he was only an hour away from her now. He was trying not to speed or veer into a ditch on these icy back roads. Canadian winters are beautiful and dangerous.

We are all more than what we seem. I am a broken crayon that still colors. You are too. Keep making your life into a work of art.
