I’m proud to be a part of Indian literature as it is more than just love stories on college campuses. It’s a layered, bold, poetic, political, spiritual, and deeply personal.

I have curated a list of five Indian authors whose work deserves a permanent place on your bookshelf—and also in your heart.

1. Arundhati Roy

Recommended Read:
It’s a lyrical, haunting story about childhood, caste, and forbidden love.
This book won the Booker Prize which broke all the rules—and redefined Indian history of storytelling for the world.

2. Jhumpa Lahiri

Recommended Read:
A Short story that quietly devastated.
The author Lahiri elaborated about Indian immigrants, longing, identity, and loss with unmatched elegance.

3. Rohinton Mistry

Recommended Read:
The story set during the Emergency, this is one of the most powerful and heartbreaking books I’ve ever read.
