Things Your Therapist Says That Make You Squirm
And why a bit of squirmy is a good thing
Find the right therapist, and you find a safe place to explore your problems and, hopefully, learn how to deal with them. There’s nothing like realising that you can sit in a room with a stranger and get the help you need.
But, no therapy journey is smooth. While you need to feel comfortable enough around your therapist to talk to them, being too comfortable all the time is a bad thing. You often need a bit of discomfort to make real progress.
If you’re anything like me, then you embrace the comfortable and sit on the uncomfortable to squash it away. One thing I can tell you after five years of therapy is that a good therapist won’t let you get away with this. They will sometimes say things that will make you squirm in your seat and let your discomfort out into the room.
Here’s a client’s eye view of things therapists often say to throw you out of your comfort zone.
Nothing
I see a psychodynamic psychotherapist. While they talk, they don’t lead our sessions. They don’t tell me what to talk about, what to say or what to do.
