Legends of Sintra and Creation
Legends abound around the Iniciatic Pit in Sintra built in the early twentieth century. This story is based on the legend of Mariana, a woman who ignored warnings from locals and entered the pit.
We went for a promenade with a couple and their children in the woods of Sintra. The year was 2021 and we were vaccinated — in hindsight, the coming of the end of times was far away. As we looked down into the circular pit, we felt a bright and invigorating glow that filled our lungs with air and our minds with freedom.
The time was after Easter. The Atlantic breeze brought along mist; a humidity that makes your muscles ache to the bone link. It felt cozier as we went down the ladder. Down in the pit’s circular chamber, all drafts frizzed, and we felt an otherworldly presence brushing against our skin like feathers. In the faint light corridors, whispers echoed in the shadows.
Going in our path, several tunnels departed deep into the earth. From the depths of a long corridor, a voice boomed, deep and resonant. The voice spoke of ancient secrets, forgotten civilizations, and hidden realms. It spoke of the interconnectedness of all things and the delicate balance between light and darkness.
