Wandering the Wilds of Iceland
July Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Cute Creatures”
Cute, but don’t call them ponies!
It was late morning as we drove a beastly Icelandic truck (if you’ve been there, you know what I mean) around The Golden Circle. From our perch high above most civilian vehicles on the route, we saw these beautiful horses making their way alone down a well-worn track.
As they ambled past us, my friend and our guide, Larus, shared a bit of knowledge about these incredible horses that are unique to Iceland. These horses are typically sized like a pony but apparently have the bone density, strength, and ability to be ridden like full-sized horses, hence being called horses in Iceland. They have the unique trait of two additional gaits called the tölt and skeið, in addition to walk, trot, canter, and gallop.
At the end of the day though, I think they are just cute. Especially if you can catch them with their winter coats still on — this was late June, so these horses were less warmly dressed. A good excuse to return to this incredible country one day!
Thank you for reading! And thank you to for this month’s Six Word Photo Story prompt! Here are a few more gems that popped out to me over the last few days:
