The Joyful Art of Painting Desserts
A slice of inspiration
It sits squarely in the center of a blue delft plate, fork at the ready, waiting for you to take the first bite. You anticipate how the tartness of the lemon will fill your mouth and mix with the sweet fluffy meringue that is baked to perfection. Little swirls of golden brown on the surface tell you the baker got the baking time just right. You pick up the fork, slowly raise it to your lips, and then you taste it, a slice of heaven on a plate!
I have always enjoyed painting desserts. They are such a lighthearted, fun subject, and of course, always so colorful. The dessert paintings of the artist are some of the most beloved in American art, and have inspired many artists including myself to include sweet treats in still life set ups. Thiebaud is associated with the movement because of his interest in objects of mass culture, although his early works, executed during the fifties and sixties, slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists.
