A Love Letter to My Incredibly Cool Inner Child
Cool people rarely know they’re cool.
Pretty brown eyes are an understatement. You glow from the inside out and I do not care to tame it. You fought when it made sense. You spoke up when it didn’t. You insisted on being baptized. You dared to do what was necessary even in the face of punishment. You are the bee’s knees, little one, all that and a bag of chips. You are the extra sip that takes the night too far and you are everything I have ever dreamed of being, becoming, and loving. Because of you, I’m the mother and the cool woman I had no idea I’d become. You baby Q, are the coolest of the coolest and it ripples through every relationship you have and every person you’ve ever connected yourself deeply to.
As an adult, I now realize that cool people rarely know they’re cool. They are often admired quietly and envied loudly. They do not quite fit into the pack because they’re here to help guide them instead.
Like you, cool people intrinsically bare themselves, putting down roots only in the soil that nurtures authentic forms of expression. When they betray themselves, they will inevitably prune all that causes harm to them, even if it is parts of themselves. Cool people are often uncool because they are unable or unwilling to conform.
