Dinner was a success, of course. Together they slurped through a bottle of Chardonnay, getting more relaxed and giggly as the evening wore into night. Maddy asked about her gran’s mysterious request for help shortly after arriving, but Claudia put her off, saying it’d wait until tomorrow.

Meanwhile, she got Maddy to tell her all about her life as a student in Huddersfield. A little later, an excited Claudia also showed off her new clothing. Maddy agreed they really suited her and admired her gran’s boldness to break out of such a long-established style. She could sense there was more afoot and delighted in the anticipation.

How lovely it is to commune with a grandchild as an adult, thought Claudia, as they messily ate large spoonfuls of the really very good ice cream. She’d been right about that, she proudly acknowledged to herself.

Around midnight, as they started yawning in earnest and the conversation slowed, they agreed that bed was calling.
