The Second Show
A poem
The final sleepless night
as the day creep ever closer
Reaching for safety in our embrace
We watch as the sun enters centre stage
Reminding us it’s time
Curtains up
for the second show
Our lines rehearsed
Our brave masks strapped on tight
Make-up barricading the onslaught
That we both know
is going to strike us both
We both know how the song will go
Pain hiding itself in every word
In every smile we try to put on
I’ll be fine we say
I’ll see you soon we say
Another show we have to perform
Heavy hearts tucked away in our satchels
We dance the dance we know by heart
Months of practise preparing us this time
It won’t hurt as much
But the tears will still come rolling down
Empty beds
Eyes filled with an enormous amount of longing
Next month couldn’t come sooner
Sunrises ignored by us both
It never is the same alone
I’ll see you soon darling
We both know the show will come to an end
