I’m Shocked Into Reality
Seasons Changed Places While I Dreamed
Singers saunter, amble, glide into places
Newly vacated by the songs of summer
Leaving with its soprano tweets short and sweet
Outside window failing to quiet bombastic bass
Of neighbors’ ambitious builds, fantastic follies
Now brought to glorious reality of unfinished mess.
Because I am erratic wise about the world,
I cannot describe the change in chorus as precisely
As the perfect order with which seasons shifted,
Overlapping dancers swinging without thought —
Unblinking brilliance wizening, falling faded from branches
With winter whispered promise of ice cold searing.
Because I cannot know everything —
And wouldn’t want to even if I could —
I will know this day’s sunshine strong on my back,
Yesterday’s cold rain frosted into sparkling grasses
Lightly stomped by proud wild turkeys parading
Across lawn while we stare into fire, mull memories.
