THINGS THAT SHOULDN’T NEED TO BE EXPLAINED
A ‘Good’ Snake That Eats Itself
Still loses
Reddit exemplifies how people who come together — focused solely on either hate, power, or money — are almost certain to continue winning.
“Poking fun at someone’s death will never be cool.”
This comment, left on a post about Brian Thompson’s, UnitedHealthcare CEO, murder received 9 comments, all negative, within 3 hours.
This comment does not condone any of Brian’s actions as CEO. It does not take away from the people whose health most likely worsened due to not receiving the care they were rightfully due.
At the time of this writing, the comment sits at a negative karma, meaning multiple accounts ‘downvoted’ it.
People ‘fighting for a cause’ were willing to put their time and effort into discouraging basic humanity. Imagine a team of people banding together to fight the injustices of the world, only to tear itself apart because of slight indifferences of opinion.
If you’re wondering what the ‘cause’ that bonded these people together is, it’s the disapproval of a CEO that exploits its customers by refusing coverage in time of need, at an industry high — something this writer is against as well.
This wasn’t the first run-in with mob mentality. A previous post by this writer, warning against the threats of fascism and/or tyranny, also received multiple downvotes. After a few comments back-and-forth with the account that appeared to instigate the barrage, the other person noted they considered this writer to be ‘on their side, but with slightly different views’.
Probabilistically, these might not be the first instances of ‘friendly fire’ on Reddit. How many people who can offer a decent word have simply stopped trying because they feel threatened or their efforts are in vain?
Are you playing the victim and/or saying the mob will always win? Nope. Are you saying these people are banded together by hate, now? Not even. What’s the catch?
Now imagine a group of wealthy people creating an organization built solely for the purpose of obtaining more wealth through any unethical practice imaginable.
Yes, it’ll turn into a snake pit. Yes, there will be plenty of squabbles at some point. Yes, many of the original group will be ousted by small cliques or coups. But those ousted will almost certainly be in a much better financial position than the ‘fighter of injustice’, because they temporarily set their differences apart and worked towards a common goal.
Hate groups act in a similar fashion, but typically also begin to eat themselves after making a sizable impact.
The team that destroys itself, or others with similar opinions, without actually creating a positive impact seems like a moot point. It doesn’t matter how much smarter or how much good intent there is, tearing each other down doesn’t help ‘the cause’.
People against the injustices of the world, stop helping the injustices.
