Different flavors of ice cream in their silver boxes in a gelateria (ice cream shop).

I was one of those kids who was always looking for a little treat. I didn’t care for chips or salty snacks, but not a day went by without me asking for something sweet. Candy, cake, chocolate bars, didn’t matter.

Living in Italy, summer, to me, equalled ice cream. Every single day — twice a day if I could pull it off— my mother tried to keep me away from it, but I’d eat it every chance I got.

Nothing beats the sweet indecision in front of the silver boxes of different flavors. I’d start choosing while waiting in line, but often my turn would come before I could make a final decision.

Stracciatella always had to be there. It was, and still is, my favorite flavor: milk ice cream with dark chocolate chips. But then it had to be balanced by something different, maybe tiramisu or cookie cream. Every once in a while, I’d let new, unconventional flavors like penguin tempt me — they were usually chocolate in disguise.

One thing was for sure: I was no strawberry gal. When looking at the flavor boxes, there were only three I’d skip without having to think about it: strawberry. Lemon, because ugh. And pistachio.
