We are constantly told it’s a bad idea to go back to your ex, but nobody ever tells us not to go back to your best friend you fell out with many years ago. What’s the worst that could happen?
I had changed ten schools by the time I was twelve, and usually, it took me a while to get to know people and make friends. This time, everything was different. I made friends straight away, and one girl stood out from the rest. I never had a best friend before. M. became my best friend. For the first time in my life, I felt like somebody got me. I always had someone to talk to, cry and laugh with. I was happy. I thought it would last forever.
Two years later, I changed schools again, but we kept in touch. We kept in touch until we were 19. We lived in different countries but spoke on the phone almost every day. One day she called me in tears and said she was in trouble. She needed money. I didn’t have a job and, without a second thought, asked my parents, who knew her very well, to send her a money transfer. She was grateful. She cried and told me she would give it back as soon as she can.
Shortly after that incident, our conversations fizzled out. We began talking less and less. A year went by like…
