Affirmations are an incredibly powerful way to change the way your mind works. Check out part 1 of this Affirmations series to learn more about affirmations and their impact.

In the remaining parts of the series, I will discuss different types of affirmations and give examples of each. In this part, I will discuss positive affirmations and gratitude.

Let’s face it, most of us tend to be a bit too negative, and we could all use more positivity in our lives. By using positive affirmations and gratitude, we can train our minds through neuroplasticity to be more positive.

Why does it feel like it’s so easy to be negative? The simple answer is that our minds are programmed to keep us alive, not to keep us happy. When our brains evolved during our ancestors' time, those who were wired to be more negative were more likely to survive and pass on their negativity to their offspring.

And why did negativity help them survive?

Imagine two cavepeople talking alone in the woods when they hear a rustle in the bush next to them. The negative caveperson might assume the worst, convince himself there’s a sabretooth tiger in the bush, panic, and run back to the tribe. Meanwhile, his positive counterpart just sits there in slight amusement, perfectly safe. Nine times out of ten, the positive caveperson would be correct, but that one time they are wrong, it’s over for them. Many of us are the descendants of the negative cavepeople because they were more likely to survive.

That negativity might have been useful back then, but today, we don’t have to worry about being eaten by predators, so the negativity often does more harm than good. So the next time you have negative thoughts, it’s important to be aware that your brain is there to keep you alive rather than happy. To find true happiness, you have to stop listening to all of your thoughts.

In addition to that, we can start planting the seeds of positivity through affirmations. Each time you use positive affirmations effectively, you are growing and strengthening new circuits in your brain so that you will naturally be more positive throughout your daily life. Believing in the power of neuroplasticity and affirmations is an important part of an effective affirmations practice.

Here are some examples of positive affirmations and gratitude that work for me. You may wish to recite each one to yourself out loud or in your head. Do whatever works best for you! Try to take your time with it. It’ll be more impactful if you truly feel each within your body.

  1. It’s a beautiful day
  2. I love my life
  3. I fill my heart with love
  4. I am grateful to be alive
  5. After visiting a third-world country, I’m grateful for living in this country
  6. I am grateful for running water
  7. I am positive
  8. Life is good
  9. I am calm
  10. I am healing
  11. I am improving every day
  12. I love you
  13. I am proud of you!

I invite you to create your own affirmations to bring more positivity and gratitude into your life.
