Why Affirmations Don’t Always Help

Using positive affirmations is in these days. They help you believe in your own abilities. One swears by it; the other has his doubts. You mainly doubt when those positive mantras feel like you’re lying to yourself. Because if you say, “I am successful,” while you are convinced deep within yourself that you aren’t, I don’t think it is such a good idea to use this affirmation.

But what does scientific research tell us about how valuable positive affirmations are? We look at two different theories to help us: the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and the Acceptance and Commitment Theory. (ACT)

EFT incorporates elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy supported by rhythmic tapping with your hand on specific points of the body. These points are located on energetic pathways, the meridians. When tapping, you formulate a positive affirmation such as, “Though I sometimes find myself unsuccessful, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

That opening sentence is important because the following sentences follow it. The idea is that by repeating the sentences and tapping, you learn to accept yourself more and more as a person who is as good as he is, even if…
