I first realized the call of the lost treasure of the Templars early on a foggy morning, among the ruined walls of Glenluce Abbey in Scotland. Not treasure hunting in search of gold, but seeking something more elusive than that—a sense of the order defined by purpose, fraternity, and sacrifice.
Just a Whisper Through Time
Once, my grandmother brought me a silver denier she claimed had lost its original sheen; it was a copy of the coin she found while on vacation in Provence; she called it "a promise." She said that the Templars had hidden something more than wealth, that they buried hope for a world made by service.
I kept that coin in my pocket while traveling on a train through the south of France during my teenage years. When a stranger missed the connection and begged me for change, I handed the coin over unconsciously. Realizing her astonished smile, I dug out the first fragment of that buried treasure: compassion.
