My Father Was Left at an Orphanage — Here’s What God Taught Me About Caring for the Fatherless
"How My Father’s Story Led Me to God’s Heart for the Orphaned"
My father bears a story beginning in silence—the kind of silence reverberating through the foyer of an orphanage after he had been left there as a child. He seldom mentioned those early years, yet there stood the sheer weight of abandonment in his eyes and between the pauses in our conversations. I grew up feeling that there was something empty inside him-a need for belonging so great that not much love could satisfy it.
As I grew up and matured, I was able to grasp the depth of his agony and forces of will so great that it propelled a man to have some life put together from such beginnings. This then taught me the lot on fatherlessness, and I was stirred to seek God's heart for the orphaned and needy.
Finding God’s Heart for the Orphaned
In search of understanding, I turned to the Scriptures, and there I discovered that God's concern for the fatherless was a constant theme.
Psalm 68:5 uh "Father to the fatherless and protector of widows in his holy habitation!" This caused a thought that God can consider Himself as a Father to those who have none. Walking along the Scriptures came James 1:27: "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction." Here caring for the orphans was spoken of as an act of faith, not of unusualism.
Lessons Learned from My Father’s Life
My father's life is a story of triumph over adversities. The inconsistencies of parental supervision from his side might have helped him view all matters concerning good and bad with a clear perspective. He was known to reach out to those whom fortune had not favored much, maybe in a way similar to what he himself endured.
By witnessing his acts, I learned that caring for orphans entails not just providing for their physical needs but also giving emotional support, guidance, and that feeling of being part of something. His empathy served as a bridge from his experiences to acts of kindness that touched countless lives.
Answering Jesus' Call
Inspired by the biblical example and my father's life, I felt compelled to get involved. I started volunteer work with shelters and mentoring programs to try and fill the void that my father had never been able to fill himself. In these settings, I met boys and girls, as well as young adults who were in dire need of a connection with another soul and an affirmation of self.
During these interactions, I experienced the "living reality" of Isaiah 1:17: "Learn to do right; seek justice; defend the oppressed; take up the cause of the fatherless..." [1] And every act performed in service to this end becomes one step towards fulfilling the divine edict-the only hope and stability in a world struggling without parental support.
Emanating God's Love Through Action
To take care of the fatherless is the reflection of God's unconditional love. Entering into the lives of the fatherless, we become agents of His grace and mercy. This is a living reality of the words from Deuteronomy 10:18 that state that God "defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow and loves the foreigner residing among you..." [1]
Then, through this journey, I have come to learn that even the smallest things done matter. Just being present for these children, listening, serving as a mentor, and demonstrating the love of God to them actually means something.
A Legacy of Compassion
The process of abandonment through my father's life was redeemed and purposed. The life of my father gave birth to a legacy of compassion that continues to build upon everything I do and believe. In learning from my father, I was taught that our past cannot define us, rather it is how we answer to our circumstances that actually decides our destiny.
In honoring that walk, I strive to provide others with hope, as they would see that love and encouragement can touch-and-transform lives. In taking in this very call to nurture the fatherless, we are not only fulfilling an ordinance of God but also striving to make the world a more compassionate and just place.
Conclusion
The lessons taught through my father's life and the Bible have deeply affected me in my understanding of compassion and responsibility. They remind me that every act of kindness for the fatherless is a step toward manifesting the love and justice that God desires for His people. In opening our hearts and lives to those in need, we embark on a distinguished endeavor whose very outset resounds from the heart of God.
