Learning to Say No Changed My Life
One day, I got up and again, found myself with my arm to the reach to grab my phone. It stopped over the Instagram logo, and I kind of thought about it for a while. I didn’t open it. In that moment, I started to understand something really important: I was no longer who I used to be. My time was wasted with the likes, the anxiety about not seeing the pictures, and the never-ending hole of scrolling through the feed. But it was then that a light bulb switched on: “What about if I give up?” So, I made the decision to quit Instagram for one month. This 30-day challenge resulted in my being a mental cleanse, a shift from denial to consciousness, and most importantly a journey to my own true voice.
The problem was far from being solved yet, the more time went by, the more I also observed something about my life that was not related to social networks. Everything and every person, I was always the one to say “Yes” to, all the time. I was living the cycle of being nice, putting their expectations above my comfort. Every next “Yes” was leading to my exhaustion one more step down the road.
The very moment I changed my attitude and started saying “No,” the whole world turned the other way around. I realized that saying “No” was not a sign of me being selfish, but it was actually the thing that was boosting my power to protect my own energy and time.
