Stepping Onto Another Planet In Southern Spain
Exploring blood rivers and crater lakes in one of the oldest mines in the world
Most tourists that visit Southern Spain are drawn to the beaches, mountains and quaint towns. But my boyfriend Craig and I are more interested in quirky sights that are off the beaten track.
Driving To Another Planet
While researching the area I came across a mine which happened to be one of the oldest in the world, with a history dating back 5000 years.
The scenery looked so unworldly in photos that Craig and I decided to take a detour on our big three-month road trip around Spain.
Our plan wasn’t to see the actual mines but to search for the red rivers and bizarre landscapes created by the mineral-rich soil.
The first glimpse we got of the colourful sights was when we drove down a road wedged between two shallow lakes. To our left was a green-tinged lake with a terracotta-stained shoreline, and to our right was a pink lake with petrified tree trunks.
The water levels were low due to the drought so the shoreline was covered in cracked, orange clay. It was quite beautiful though and looked like a piece of mosaic artwork, yet it felt like we were walking along giant…
