2024 in Review: Cocktails, Cooking and a Few Trips Abroad
My year told by one photo from each month — part of a January writing challenge
January: It’s still Christmas!
When my dad was a boy, my grandparents would put up their Christmas tree and decorate the house after the kids had gone to bed on Christmas Eve so that they would wake up to a decorated house Christmas morning.
It makes me sad to see people toss their trees to the curb in December, but it is consistent with the prevalent American culture of rushing — pumpkin-spiced lattes in August, Christmas carols in November, plastic Valentine’s Day decorations filling stores by New Year’s.
The Christmas season runs through Jan. 6, and every year, I remind people of that on my Instagram stories, usually with a photo of a cocktail in front of my Christmas tree.
This is one of those photos. I likely posted it to my Instagram stories with the caption “It’s still Christmas!”
