If you’re looking for last-minute Christmas gifts, you could do no worse than a holiday pack of Nomu Mayo, a new beverage delight. Lawson, a store chain in Japan, says it’s “the chilled drink mayo fanatics have long been waiting for.” Yes, it’s a mayonnaise drink. Online comments about this product include things like “disgusting,” “as horrifying as it sounds,” and “gonna retch.”

Also in the news is a team at Northwestern University studying “dancing molecules” capable of helping regenerate damaged cartilage. It has implications for recovery from serious injuries. The team injected these molecules to “reverse paralysis after severe spinal cord injuries in mice.

Who’s inflicting severe spinal cord injuries in mice? Are they following little ambulances to mouse crash scenes? Maybe they have a mouse maze with a bit of cheese at the bottom of a sheer drop. Imagine — some poor PhD candidate compelled to do this work, crippling mice, trying to keep in mind the greater good. I would need therapy.

But who doesn’t like science news? There was a recent article about pearlfish, eel-like fish that live in sea cucumber anuses and sometimes eat sea cucumber gonads. Reading on, the article said that even sea cucumbers “with anal teeth” succumb to these parasitic fish. THAT was a revelation. I had never heard of anal teeth, and now you have the same ghastly image in your mind that I had in mine.

Wait until your guest’s mouths are full. Then: “Guess what I read the other day?”

You’re welcome.
