I am my daughter’s cookie bitch

Whenever she wants a cookie or a treat, this year-and-a-half-old fire cracker marches to me. With the most determined look in her eyes, she slowly and deliberately extends her little hands towards me, gesturing her desire, while calmly and confidently whispering “Give”.

All the while not breaking the eye contact. It’s intense.

With a sweaty forehead, what I usually think in these moments is I’m counting my lucky stars she isn’t asking for my kidney because I’d probably be getting a knife out to find myself pancreas deep before giving it another thought.

I respond well to strong leadership.

Trying to teach your kids how to hold their place in the world, express their wants and needs, and stand up for what they ask for is a tough balance, isn’t it?

As the Rolling Stones would say,

“You can’t always get what you want”

But I’ll tell you one thing. No matter how many times she gets rejected, and how hard she takes it at the moment, every next attempt is the same.

Same determination. Same confidence. Same no-doubt-I’m-getting-this stare.

On her way to make the world her cookie bitch

Perhaps it’s not about the rejections we face. Maybe it’s about getting up after each punch the world serves us, still sure we deserve that cookie.
Both the metaphorical and literal ones.

So let’s go. Let’s get out there and make the world our cookie bitch. Ask for what you want, and then ask again.

Hold that stare.

I’m asking for a double chocolate frosted one today.
